A precious metals ira can only contain 4 valuable metals in it, in order to qualify as a legitimate retirement account.

These metals are:

  1. Gold
  2. Silver
  3. Platinum
  4. Palladium

It is assumed that each entity, whether it’s a coin, bar, or bullion, be at least 99% pure, meaning, most of the physical asset must actually consist of that much precious metal.

If you want to invest in physical metals beyond these 4 with your own money, here is a list of alternative valuable metals as well (note, safety concerns must be adhered to when handling them):

  1. Rhodium
  2. Iridium
  3. Osmium
  4. Rhenium
  5. Ruthenium
  6. Germanium
  7. Beryllium

If going with alternative valuable metals in the 7 item checklist above, do note carefully that these are NOT common metals and are not widely accepted as “precious” despite their high dollar value per kilogram. It’s best to stick with the common 4 metals of gold, silver, platinum, and palladium.
