And the debate goes on... It's now 2011 and for the past 2 months the media has been jumping with news about the 'apparent' millions of users that are now quitting Facebook. The same reasons appear to be quoted, namely privacy and time management, and yet FB has just hit 750m users. Personally I feel that FB is becoming the new mobile phone. I remember owning a mobile in the early 90's, hating it, getting rid of it whilst declaring that it was the worse invention ever and that I would never own another, then buying another a couple of years later. My point, well FB is only 5 years old (open to everyone) and sure you there will be backlashes, but I think it is also becoming a mode of preferred communication for many and in the future, possibly all.

"Really, social networking is fine, and it’s all the rage, but it seems to me like a fun but time-limited platform. There’s a “take your breath away” effect that works for a while, but when that’s gone, you’re not left with a whole lot–some folks who overshare, occasional funny or important pieces of information, and a whole lot of stuff that wastes your time and somehow leaves you feeling less happy than before you logged on."

I kind of feel this way about blogs as well. Even my own.

One more thing--readers should not interpret this article to mean that I am asking people not to "friend" me on Facebook. I'm on Facebook--feel free to connect. No worries.

Just wanted to say that. I try to be careful in how I think about things, but I'm not grumpy.

I'm confident my wife would agree with that.

I think, Owen, there's another aspect. Facebook has become necessary in many instances for academic/professional reasons. One may want to use it socially, for example, but have to maintain a strictly professional profile.

Andy,

Yeah, I noted that in the article. Would have liked some stats, just as I would have in the Twitter post I did a few days back.

I would note that while numbers of those joining Facebook may be high (astronomical, even), it is equally important to chart how long those users stay on the site. Twitter has a huge attrition rate, for example, losing a vast percentage of users just a month or so after they sign up.

Social media may not be as much of an "impact phenomenon" as one might initially think. As I suggest in this blog, I think social media often has a "wow" or "cool" factor that can quickly fade if the product isn't significant.

Good words on pride.

It has been pointed out elsewhere that her evidence is largely anecdotal, quoting such people as "another friend." The NYT's journalistic standards aren't what they once were. Indeed, Facebook's number of daily unique visitors is still climbing, so if people are leaving, there are still quite a few just entering the scene.

That being said, I'm definitely "over" social media, and spend almost no time anymore on those sites. I'm already susceptible to sinful pride as it is, and those sites only amplify that tendency.
